I just hope he’s not forgotten amidst all the other great Chicago albums this year. Regardless, “Noir” is a passable sophomore effort from an artist that I think is gonna keep steadily improving. Not only would it have helped the album’s all-around quality, it would’ve shaved a good chunk of time off of this too. There’s 6 or 7 songs worth of “fat” that could’ve easily been trimmed off of this project. It’s length is it’s biggest detriment by far. But it’s not as conceptual as the work of his peers. I enjoyed it for the most part, don’t get me wrong. Aside from that, Smino is interesting enough to carry a song solo. She takes over the song’s latter half and it makes for one of the best songs on the album. The only feature worth commending is Ravyn Lenae on “MF Groove”. There are moments like “Z4L” or “Krushed Ice” where they go a step further and kill the song for me as a whole. Most of the time, the ones on here just fail to add anything. This album does itself a big favor by having only a few features. It’s nowhere near as good, but it’s almost Frank Ocean-esque. (Or the hook he provided on Drake’s “Blue Tint”) I do commend him for trying unconventional things, though. The hook on “Klink” is way too reminiscent of Future’s “la-di-da-di-da” mishap for my liking. Even I have my moments where I wasn’t loving it. In fact, it may not appeal to the majority of audiences. The places he takes his vocals on this album are definitely not gonna appeal to everyone. Much like Earthgang, Smino at times can be a very acquired taste. As a fan of them, that’s something I’m happy to hear. However, his cadence and flows just carry a very similar tone. This isn’t to say I find Smino’s music derivative of Earthgang because content wise, it doesn’t compare. He can mimic the styles of both Johnny Venus and Doctor Dot pretty well. The best way I can describe him is as a one-man Earthgang. There are a lot of artists that blend singing with rapping, but Smino is one of the more interesting people to do it.

Out of all the artists making their way out of that area, I must admit Smino is the one I’m least familiar with. The chosen production plays in conjunction with the warmth of his vocals it’s an album largely rooted in heartbreak that’s made for lounging in the sun with a broken heart and Hennessy on your breath.The year of Chicago artists continues with the release of Smino’s latest album, “Noir”. He doesn’t have the strongest vocal range, but he does have more than one trick, and he does an excellent job showcasing this across Swaecation. His natural texture is a cross between the sugary flavor of Fruity Pebbles cereal and the soft weightlessness of marshmallows. There’s an undeniable pleasantness about Swae Lee’s voice. Swaecation (first listen) closing thoughts: It’s just one of the rare moments where Swae sounds outside of his element. I could’ve happily concluded my listening experience at “Red Wine” but “What’s In Your Heart?” isn’t terrible. Rock stars are dead, bring back the super boy bands. I think all unconventional singers should get together and make an album of trap ballads. I would happily accept a duet with Future. It doesn't quite fit for his soft falsetto. The drums are kicking! I feel like it’s overly aggressive for his eloquence. Lee doesn’t have much range but he makes each atmosphere work for his style. A very broad palette of sounds and styles. Knocking! There’s a nice diversity in the production. Yeah, that Young Thug verse is too much for this to be the crossover moment it deserves to be but I’m playing this on my yacht (read: in my Ford Focus).
